Discovery: How to install SIMCard into the Discovery Unit

ABBREVIATIONS:

  1. DU Discovery Unit
  2. SC SIMCard

Scope

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to properly install a nano SC into the DU. It covers powering off the DU to prevent damage, locating the SC slot, and carefully examining the SC’s orientation using the device’s alignment diagram. The instructions emphasize gently inserting the card into the slot, ensuring it is fully seated, and then powering on the device to confirm that the SC is correctly recognized. Each step ensures a smooth and safe process for proper SC installation.

SIMCard Installation:

    1. Power Off the Device: Turn off the DU to prevent any potential damage while inserting the SC.

    2. Locate the SC Slot: Find the vertical SC slot, located on the top right hand side of the device next to the antennas. (See "Figure 1" in the images below)

    3. Examine the SC’s Orientation: Take a close look at your SC. It has one notched corner and a series of metal contacts on one side. The notch is designed to ensure the correct insertion direction.

    4. Look for the Device's Orientation Diagram: Next to the SC slot, there is often a small diagram or arrow indicating the proper orientation for the SC. This will show you how to align the notched corner of the SC. (See "Step 1" in the images below)

    5. Insert the SC into the Slot: Hold the SC with the metal contacts facing inward (toward the DU) and the notched corner aligned according to the diagram. Slowly insert it into the vertical slot. (See "Step 2" in the images below)

    6. Push the SC Gently: Use your finger to gently push the SC into the slot until you feel a slight click. The SC should slide in smoothly without resistance. (See "Step 3" in the images below)

    7. Ensure Proper Insertion: The SC should sit flush with the slot’s opening. If part of the card is sticking out, carefully push it in further until it’s fully seated. (See "Step 4" in the images below)

    8. Power On the Device: Once the SC is inserted and secure, power the DU back on. Press the power button on the DU (the ring around the button should light up)

    9. Verify the power is onIf the DU does not automatically start, press the PC button on the DU and wait for it to start up and enter Windows.

    10. Verify SC Recognition: Check the status bar or device settings to ensure that the DU detects the SC and connects to your mobile network.

    11. Remove the SC: To remove the SC, use your finger to gently push the SC down and release from the slot until you feel a slight click. You should then be able to remove the SC from the DU.

    Description of a Nano SC:

    • Shape: The Nano SC is a small rectangular chip with one corner cut off, known as the notched corner.
    • Metal Contacts: One side of the card has gold-coloured metal contacts, which connect to the phone's internal components.
    • Size: The dimensions are 12.3mm x 8.8mm, making it the smallest of all SC types.
    • Notched Corner: This helps to align the SC correctly in the slot, ensuring proper placement.
